Speculation has long been that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be cast in The Dark Knight Rises, but rumors around what character he would play have been all over the map. He has now officially signed on for the final entry in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy and his role has been revealed thanks to multiple sources (though not confirmed officially yet by Warner Brothers).

Gordon-Levitt will play Alberto Falcone, the son of Carmine Falcone the crime boss who appeared in Batman Begins (played by Tom Wilkinson). Nolan has cited ‘The Long Halloween’ as one of his favorite Batman stories in which Alberto Falcone becomes a serial killer and gang-war inducer known as “The Holiday Killer”. It would also make sense within the story to involve the Falcone’s given that Selina Kyle aka Catwoman believes Carmine to be her father.

This would seem to complete a trio of villains in the film with Bane (Tom Hardy) and Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) already locked in. The Dark Knight Rises is set to being filming this summer with a release date set for July 20th 2012.
