When a movie becomes a blockbuster hit of the magnitude seen with Independence Day there will always be talk about a sequel. As director Roland Emmerich begins his rounds promoting 2012 questions on that topic are coming up again. In an interview with LatinoReview he discusses the stage they are now at with a script having been completed.

Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we’ve found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean’s and my deal, and Will’s (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with.  So it’s just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says “Why don’t you do it without Will Smith?” I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it’s in limbo and lately the studios are fighting.

There has been no bankable stars as consistent as Will Smith ever since he broke out with his role in Independence Day. Surely a follow-up would be huge. One has to wonder what the story would be though since it appeared that the entire alien race had been wiped out. I don’t think anyone would be satisfied with a simple “they didn’t get them all” type plot leading to another similar struggle.
