A fifth entry in the Final Destination franchise is now in development, with Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing) penning the script. The Final Destination was supposed to be the last chapter in the franchise but considering it made so much money, overseas especially, New Line decided to give the green light to yet another entry. The last one made $66 million domestically and $115 overseas while being made on a budget of just $43 million. It also was released in 3D, though that was before the 3D craze had taken hold.

The Final Destination series has been extremely successful because there is a built in audience that can be counted on. Grosses have been a consistent and each one has turned a profit due to the modest budgets. This is mostly due to the cast being filled with new-comers or relative unknowns. A similar formula has been had with the Saw franchise, which has kept budgets low and continues to make a profit even as grosses tail off with each subsequent release.
