The Blind Side nearly knocked off New Moon as the number one movie at the box office over the weekend. New Moon pulled in $42.5 million which was down a stunning but not unanticipated 70%. In comparison The Blind Side shot up over 17% from its opening weekend for $40.1 million. That puts it at $100 million in just nine days of release while New Moon has collected $230 million in the same time frame.

Of the three new movies that released wide on Thanksgiving it was Old Dogs that pulled in the most with $16.8 million for the weekend and a total of $24 million for the five days. Ninja Assassin made $13.1 million to complete the period with $21 million. Fantastic Mr. Fox collected $7 million for a total of $10 million. Fox has the best long term potential considering reviews and word-of-mouth.

1- The Twilight Saga: New Moon $42.5 ($230.7)
2- The Blind Side $40.1 ($100.0)
3- 2012 $18.0 ($138.7)
4- Old Dogs $16.8 ($24.1)
5- A Christmas Carol $16.0 ($105.0)
6- Ninja Assassin $13.1 ($21.0)
7- Planet 51 $10.2 ($28.4)
8- Precious $7.1 ($32.4)
9- Fantastic Mr. Fox $7.0 ($10.1)
10- The Road $1.5 ($2.0)

I have to believe that a "feel good" movie plays well in this economy especially during this time of year. That coupled with the backing of the NFL (which always can use some positive pub on its players) should keep The Blind Side strong at the box office throughout the Christmas season

New Moon was ok but geared to a select group. The Blind Side was a wonderful family movie and I am not surprised it is doing so well - I suspect word of mouth has a lot to do with the large increase this week.
  • Huge drop off for New Moon. They were projected to have made 66 mil
